JPG Challenge - What do you Love? What do you Fear? A Diptych

Juxtapose two pictures . On one side, a picture of something (or someone ) you love . Next to it ,same size, something you fear. This creates a two part composition called a DIPTYCH.

SHELLS IN SHADOW

CARVING OUT THE LIGHT

1.      My goals and intentions in this artwork were to focus on shadow and light and work on creating a good merge between the two.
2.      I accomplished this by erasing and pressing harder or lighter with my charcoal.
3.      My painting is about dramatic shadows.
4.      I had a hard time not using black line. I also had a hard time drawing what I saw instead of what I thought I saw.
5.      I met this challenge by continuing to reference back to my paper. I also worked on this by drawing what was actually on the picture. I tried to forget that the picture was of a pumpkin and instead just draw the shadows.
6.      My painting really worked and looked well in the merges I believe.
7.      I have learned that it is a lot easier to focus on drawing the shadows first instead of drawing a pumpkin.
8.      Caravaggio really helped me in this painting because this was the type of work that he commonly did. I learned that shadows can show a lot of emotion and depth when done right.
9.      I have learned from a few artists in the class something that is not good to do. When trying to show light DON’T outline it in black line.
10.  If I could redo my drawing I would try to focus on creating the shadows first and not even trying to sketch out the pumpkin with eraser.
11.  I feel I did really good merges and showing small bits of light in the places that are needed.
